Roger Hiorns’ ‘Seizure’

I went to this exhibition doing no research at all in to who this artist was and being completely unknown in to what I was walking in to in size 7 wellies. But the result was completely compelling and mind blowing. Roger Hiorns work was based on the idea that taking chemicals out of their original function and using them in a completely revolutionary way to produce stunning crystal formations. Roger Horns ‘seizure’ is based in abandoned council flats, where one has been completely tanked and filled with supersaturated copper sulphate solution and then heated to 60°C and left for 2 week to cool to 30°C, where the crystallisation would occur. After then it was drained and the result were these huge bright blue crystal formations.

After walking in to what seemed a typical derelict council estate the room was like some sort of hidden sci-fi wonderland! The mass of this sculpture gave me a new perspective on the impacts and beauty of chemicals, and how they can be used in a new way to form beautiful natural structures. The clarity and sharpness of the room was outstanding and really gave a new aspect on the way to create art in new surroundings. Here roger has done something revolutionary Rather than present a sculpture inside an architectural space; he’s turned every surface of the architectural space into sculpture.
